by Heather on March 24, 2011

  • All sessions are limited to 4 students.

  • Each camp/class is 3.5 hours long for 5 days (Monday – Friday) and will teach a variety of skills that can used at home later. Two different sessions are offered each day to allow for full day participation, if desired.

  • All patterns will be included for personal home use. All patterns are designed by me. Full instructions will be included for future personal use.

  • If you have a sewing machine, in good working order, please bring it, along with the manual. I have a few excellent machines available for use during class, if needed.

  • I provide all of the cutting, ironing and sewing accessories, each student will be required to bring the items on the class supply list.

  • Non-messy snacks are welcome and drinking water is always a good idea.

  • Classes are designed for 8yr-16yr old participants.

  • I have a large dedicated sewing studio. There will be age appropriate music playing, card/board games and books (sewing and other) available. There is no TV, video game or open personal internet use available.

  • The internet may be utilized as a teaching tool by showing YouTube (or similar) videos and/or photo tutorials directly related to sewing. All material is evaluated for age appropriateness.

  • Each session and project will be tailored to each student’s level. The projects are carefully selected to ensure success and to challenge with new skills.

  • The session environment is relaxed, rewarding and FUN! The goal is to produce, on average, one project per day.

Its My Room!

Is your room ready for your own personal touch? In this beginning sewing class, you will learn how to use a sewing machine and create things that you can enjoy every day. The first project will be sewing your own fun and wild stuffed “monster”. Then, just so everyone knows whose room it is, you will be making a banner featuring your name to hang on your wall. To keep all your small treasures safe and organized, you will be sewing a tray. Finally, you will be creating a personalized pillow to grace your bed or chair.

Prerequisites: None! This is great for beginners!

Sleepover Makeover

Is your sleepover wear boring? Do you need a new look for your next night away from home? In this class you will be making yourself new custom PJ pants or PJ shorts. To compliment your new stylish PJ’s, you will be making a pillowcase for your pillow with a handy carrying strap to make transporting easy. Finally you will make a small zippered bag for the little necessities like a toothbrush and a drawstring tote to carry anything else you need for the evening of fun!

Prerequisites: “Its My Room” or basic sewing machine skills.

My New Look

Does your look need updating? How about a new matching outfit? How about learning how to measure yourself for a custom skirt and then making one? Of course your new skirt would look great with a new purse and tie belt too! Then use the scraps from your projects to make a matching headband. All you need to do is add a shirt from your closet and you will be all ready to go!

Prerequisites: “Its My Room” or basic sewing machine skills.

Lets Go To The Beach (or the Lake!)

Its summer and its time to cool off by getting in the water! In this class you will be making shorts to wear before you get into the water and a swimsuit coverup to throw on when you are not splashing around. You will also be taking a beach blanket and making it into an awesome tote to carry all of your accessories to the water. And after your day in the water, you will be making a wet bag to protect all of your other stuff from your wet stuff. All you need to add is some sunscreen and a swimsuit and you will be all set!

Prerequisites: “Its My Room” or basic sewing machine skills.

Too Cool For School

Are you ready to hit the books in style? Your notebook will look so much more attractive with a unique cover that you make yourself. And inside your notebook? A custom made pencil pouch with grommets that will fit over the rings of your notebook. Of course you will need someplace to carry this notebook, so you will be making a new messenger style book bag to carry all your school supplies. The book bag will feature a zippered pocket and you will make a unique animal that will clip onto the zipper pull, making this bag definitely yours. At lunch time you will be able to amaze your friends with your one -of-a-kind insulated lunch bag that you will be making.

Prerequisites: “Its My Room” or basic sewing machine skills.

To Dye For

Do you like color? To you like creating messy things? Do you want to create your own unique fabric? Then this class is for you! You will learn how to motif tie-dye a pillowcase. Then learn how to low water immersion dye a shirt. If that’s not enough for you, you will then learn how to create amazing swirly designs using dye and shaving cream! How about taking color away? Using dark cloth, natural and unique shaped objects and some bleach, you will remove color to create a unique fabric. At the end of the week, we will take some of the fabrics created and make them into personal items!

Prerequisites: Ability to follow directions and wear “old” clothes each day.

About the Instructor:

Heather first started sewing when she was 4. By the time she was a teen, she was making her own clothes and as a young adult, she sewed her children’s wardrobes.

Heather spent several years teaching machine classes for a large sewing machine dealer in Oregon. This job offered her the experience of designing unique projects and teaching hands on classes making those projects at large seminars and sewing retreats. Heather has extensive experience teaching classes, both large and small, including co-teaching at the Sewing & Stitchery Expo, the largest sewing show in the US. She is now blogging at fiberosity.com to share some of her best sewing and serging tips.

As her children got older, Heather expanded her skills to include becoming a sewing 4-H leader. While in this role, she designed and managed a variety of hands-on special seminars teaching children specific sewing skills. In addition, she also designed a project for and taught a popular class at 4-H camp two years in a row. She now consults for the camp on project ideas and patterns, but husband’s career moved her family to Austin, TX.

Heather believes that sewing should be fun and rewarding. She excels at designing projects that are approachable by a wide range of participants with varying sewing skill levels. She is not a perfectionist herself and doesn’t expect her students to be. Her motto in the sewing room, “No one knows where the mistakes are unless you point them out. Show off the perfection in each project instead.”
