Tempting Tools Thursday – Cutting Edge Rulers

by Heather on July 28, 2011

This is my favorite ruler. I now own three of these goodies. I just picked this beauty up when I was in search of a new chalk applicator due to the fact that my oldest daughter has decided that my current favorite is also her tool of choice. The chalk applicator has since disappeared……..

I love my rotary cutter. I hate replacing (or actually purchasing) the blades. Some days if I simply look at it wrong, a burr appears and causes my fabric to not cut completely. These rulers have a carbide sharpening edge. Some will point out that not all edges have the carbide sharpening on them. That is true, but that one edge makes a huge difference. It keeps my blade super sharp and has even removed burrs and dents with just a few passes. The ruler itself is slightly frosted and is very easy to read, unlike some of my other rulers. All of the typical markings are present. I am a happy customer. I have a love for quality tools and I love it even more if the tools actually work!

The company that makes these is called The Cutting Edge. I have purchased them locally or online at Fabric Depot. The first two rulers came to visit me about 6 months ago. And in that six months, I have yet to replace a rotary blade! The company also makes a rotary cutter. Notice that is not here. I have one and was not impressed.

A couple of hints to get the most out of the ruler. First, you need to flip your blade over every so often so that both sides get sharpened. Also, do a few sample cuts for accuracy because the sharpening edge is a slightly different angle than a regular ruler.
