Stackable

Austin has this major roadway referred to as “MoPac”. Coincidentally, the Missouri-Pacific railway line runs right beside it. No idea how it got it’s name. Of course, being in Austin, all roadways have at least 2 names, if not 3 or more. This is a major way to get North (where I live) to the downtown or South side of Austin (where the Austin MQG retreat was). And it is also a major traffic headache and I had left too late in the day on a Friday afternoon and was sitting, not moving, watching the train beside me move much faster than I was even dreaming of moving. Since I was headed to a quilt retreat, my mind was occupied with visions of fabric and thread. I watched all the rail cars move past, several flat bed cars were piled high with what looked like metal car chassis. No tires, no parts, just big metal rails, curved and stacked upon each other. I thought it would make a very cool quilt.

And so the idea behind Stackable was born.

That was a year ago. I’ve had drawings in my books for a while of this quilt. Last week in a sudden burst of possibly insanity, I decided to make it in time to submit for the Modern Quilt Guild Houston display. It’s very tightly quilted and took me what felt like forever. I also did piping on the inside of the binding to pull out some of the colors.
