My Favorite Quilt From This Past Year

by Heather on May 21, 2012

Ummm, I guess I have been super busy. Sewing machine petal to the metal. Its been a month since I last posted! I have been busy, not much to show for it, but I have been sewing a lot.

Amy's Creative Side

Amy, over at Amy’s Creative Side, is sponsoring a Blogger’s Quilt Festival. It got me to thinking about what I have been working on in the past few months and I thought I would enter my favorite quilt.

I didn’t expect to like this one so much. Sure, there is my Kate Spain Ombre which holds a special place in my sewing room. But this quilt was done very last minute. I had taken a horrible picture while stopped on a freeway in traffic. Beside me was a train moving a lot faster than I was, and each freight car was loaded with what looked like car chassises (is that a proper word?) stacked on top of each other. I snapped a picture because it appealed to me.

The week leading up to the deadline for the Houston Show MQG Showcase was a busy one for me. My husband was traveling and I was doing all the kid stuff (and trust me, I seem to do a lot of that stuff). I had finished Refracted Sunset. I put a lot of thought into it. I liked it but was worried that it wasn’t enough to get into the show. So I pulled out fabric from my stash, went with my gut instinct and just threw colors together. I knew what I wanted the basic quilt to look like, but sometimes executing is something completely different. Then I decided that it really needed to be straight line quilted. And that takes time, a lot of time. I started the quilt on Wednesday and the deadline was Friday evening. I was quilting every spare moment I had. I also had to photograph in daylight because color correction was not allowed in the entries and I don’t have studio lighting. So really, my deadline was Friday at about 4pm and I was hoping for a nice weather day. It was one of the craziest things I have ever decided to do. But I have a habit of flying by the seat of my pants and making it work. When I photographed, I hadn’t even clipped the threads off the backside (since it wouldn’t show in photographs). I was shocked when it was accepted and even more shocked when my husband said it was his favorite quilt. I guess going with my gut instinct helps sometimes. I tend to over think things a lot.

Be sure and follow the button up above and go see what else is entered! Oh and I might have another blog entry or two coming today so I can enter other quilts.
