Strategies for Sewing Summit Class Registration

by Heather on September 11, 2012

I saw this on Kelby Sews and thought I would chime in too cause its such a good idea!

First, yes, I am teaching. On Babylock sergers! I’m so excited (and nervous, it’s been a while since I taught!)

I also went to Sewing Summit last year and had an amazing time and met super amazing people!! I can’t recommend it enough.

Even so, this year, I have made up my dream schedule several times. Crossed off things. Changed my mind. Pulled my hair out. Realized that some of the classes I want to take are offered while I am teaching and while I need to check the rules, I am fairly certain that I can’t take a class while I’m supposed to be teaching. Darn!

Here is my philosophy…..all the classes are excellent. None of the ones I went to last year were a waste of time. And overall the ability to meet so many awesome people at once was the icing on the cake. Realistically, you might not get all your first choices for classes. I know this is a bummer, but its not the end of the world. Relax, maintain a positive attitude and everything will be fine.

There are two ways to look at classes……

1. “I really want to take THAT class and learn THAT skill.” Okay, I get this. But remember that if you don’t get that particular class, its not like you can’t learn that skill during the weekend. The teachers are there mingling too and would be happy to share knowledge and tips (well, I know I will be happy to). Its not the end of the world if you don’t get that class.

2. “Wow, I read his/her blog all the time, I want to meet him/her” This is my other way of thinking. If you get into a class with someone you always wanted to meet, its an opportunity to listen to them and really get to know them. For a couple of hours, you are in the same room with someone you really want to meet. After last year I can hear someone’s voice when I read their tweets or their blog. Its amazing. Even if the class topic doesn’t grab you at first, you never know what you will pick up in the class. I took some classes last year because I didn’t get my first choice and they were amazing! The one that sticks out in my head was with Vanessa Christenson V and Co.. It was a photography class and I did pick up some invaluable tips, like how to make your thighs look instantly slim in photos. But more importantly she is incredibly funny and a fantastic teacher. I’m almost glad I didn’t get into my first choice because I’m so glad I was in her class.
